Acupuncture
Acupuncture is a practiced medical treatment that is over 5,000 years old and is used to treat a variety of illnesses and injuries. Acupuncture is based on the theory that an energy force called Qi (pronounced Chee), which consists of all essential life activities, runs through the body along special pathways or channels called meridians. It further believes that if the Qi is interrupted, diminished or unbalanced, that this will manifest as disease. Treatment entails the insertion of very fine needles along the blocked meridian channels in order to facilitate opening of the energy flow and promotion of health. Acupuncture can be augmented by the use of electrical stimulation or moxibustion (the heating of Chinese herbs). Moxibustion is often used for respiratory and arthritic conditions. Cupping is another type of treatment used by Acupuncturists to stimulate acupuncture points by applying suction to them through the creation of a vacuum in the cup. It is commonly used to treat pains, strains and injuries. Acupuncture has been used successfully in the treatment of conditions such as low back pain, sciatica, degenerative disc disease, arthritic conditions, headache, allergies and muscle spasm. It has also been effective in the treatment of nicotine and alcohol addiction. In our practice, acupuncture is used both as a primary treatment modality as well as an adjunctive treatment to Osteopathic manipulation.
